The Roden Crater is an extinct volcano located in Arizona, USA. Since the late 1970s, it has been the site of a monumental work of land art by the American artist James Turrell.
James Turrell spotted the crater in 1974, flying over the area by plane. He convinced the Dia Art Foundation to buy the site on his behalf. Turrell transformed the inner cone of the crater into a gigantic work of land art composed of several pieces and tunnels creating a place specifically designed to observe to the naked eye the light of the sky, the sun and several astronomical phenomena.
But to finalize the project and open it to the public, James Turrell partnered with Arizona State University to raise the $200 million he needs. The goal is to open the site within five years.
This is where the famous rapper Kanye West intervenes. After visiting the facility in December, he decided in early 2019 to make a $10 million donation to the artist James Turrell through the Turrell Art Foundation so that he could finalize his project, which began in the late 1970s.
So we will have the pleasure in a few years to be able to visit this unusual and revolutionary space for astronomy lovers.
